Elton Tsang has just won the biggest buy-in tournament in poker history, after forking out €1 million, or roughly $1.1 million to enter the 2016 Big One for One Drop Invitational event held at the Casino de Monte-Carlo in Monaco.
A total of 26 players entered the tournament, which combined with 2 reentries helped created a prize pool worth €244,888,892 ($269,966,037). Three days of action later, and it was China’s Elton Tsang who eventually managed to triumph over his opponents to claim the massive prize of €11,111,111 ($12,248,912), after which he commented:
“I was feeling good, feeling comfortable, getting cards, my bluffs were working, getting a good read on the table. It was just going my way. It was going good.”
With only six paid money places, a short-stacked Haralabos Voulgaris exited the competition in 8th place, after which Brandon Steven, who bubbled the 2010 WSOP Main Event, did likewise in this tournament when his K-Q fell to the A-K of Cary Katz.
With the final table set, Elton Tsang (A-9) took out Andrew Pantling (K-3) in 6th, before being dealt K-J and taking care of Cary Katz (A-J) in 5th. Anatoly Gurtovoy then eliminated James Bord in 4th, and after being dealt A-Q he subsequently sent Rick Salomon (Q-J) to the rail in third to usher in the final phase of the battle.
At this stage, Elton Tsang held a 93.7m to 46.3m chip advantage over Anatoly Gurtovoy, but Tsang managed to grind his opponent to a short-stack after which the Russian (A-5) went all-in on a Q-3-4-2 board having made a straight. Unfortunately for him, Elton Tsang (6-5) had been dealt 6-5, and so Anatoly Gurtovoy picked-up €5,427,781 for his runner-up finish, while the top prize and title went to Elton Tsang.
After winning the third biggest prize in poker tournament history, Elton Tsang moves up from being outside the top 3,000 money earners in the game to number 21 on poker’s all-time money list with lifetime earnings of $12,752,990.
Final Table Results:
1: Elton Tsang (Hong Kong) €11,111,111
2: Anatoly Gurtovoy (Russia) €5,427,781
3: Rick Salomon (USA) €3,000,000
4: James Bord (UK) €2,100,000
5: Cary Katz (USA) €1,750,000
6: Andrew Pantling (Canada) €1,500,000
